PostHeaderIcon England, Spain aim to fine tune their preparations

England and Spain are in action tonight with the main purpose is to put on a good performance and most importantly for the players to remain injury free.

England’s build up to the world cup has been a rather quiet build up compared to usual. Dentist chair, smoking, trips to Vegas spring to mind. But all is quiet on the Wembley front, something Hodgson will welcome this development with open hands.

Expectations are sensible, meaning that England have come to terms with reality that they are not considered to be one of the favourites. Having said that, we could confirm to you that there have been some of the performances in training which have been exceptional, ranging from Jack Wilshere’s first-time passing to some of Raheem Sterling’s runs, including one step-over that totally stunned Luke Shaw and not to mention the phenomenal finishing witnessed by Wayne. Also, injury fears over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have receded with the exuberant way he has thrown himself into training.

Meanwhile, Spain will be without their fearsome and 36 goal man Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa for this match. He is suffering a recurrence of a hamstring injury that he sustained in the previous 2 big games recently vs Barcelona and Real Madrid. In his absence, other strikers will be eager to stake their claim for a starting position, where Fernando Torres could be handed a chance to stake his claim for a position in the final squad for Brazil. Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado hasn’t been included so we won’t be seeing him here but Santi Cazorla is among those who could well play a part.

Januzaj made his debut as Belgium demolished minnows Luxembourg 5-1, in Brussels. With the absence of Benteke, Belgium could end up relying on Hazard and Januzaj in a 4-3-3 formation which could provide that extra spark needed. Romelu Lukaku of Everton will play the central role, which will guarantee Januzaj and Hazard attacking the spaces with the clever movement, which was evidenced by Everton colours in the past season. Belgium are set to be the dark horses for this tournament, but the absence of Benteke has limited their options up front.

Elsewhere Jack WIlshere of England has expressed his optimism that England have a chance of doing well in Brazil. He likes the fact that there are lots of hungry players who have never been to a World Cup, the likes of Sturridge, Sterling, Lallana etc. However, in the following weeks Wilshere will be seeking some game time in order to up his fitness. Since breaking a bone in his foot in March, he has been training for the past 6 weeks and despite making a cameo role in the cup final, he is desperate to get some minutes under his belt when as England play the last 3 friendlies before the world cup opening game against Italy.

He added: “I’m not match fit. The only way you get match fit is by playing matches.

“So I’m as fit as I can be without playing matches.

“I’ve done as much as I can, now I just need a few games. It’s a different kind of fitness – it comes back quickly.

PostHeaderIcon Klinsmann wrong to ditch Lan-done.

Lan-done. The player is seriously considering his retirement from the US national soccer team after being snubbed by Jurgen Klinsmann in what could have been potentially his last tournament.

His goal in the last World Cup for the US, had produced one of those magical moments for the history of soccer for the US, There was Landon Donovan, a player at his peak, calmly sweeping the ball into the net in the frantic minutes of the last game against Algeria in Pretoria.  Needless to say, the popular Landon, was mobbed by his delirious team mates.

Donovan was always popular in the dressing room. David Moyes, one of his biggest admirers, always regarded him in the highest esteem. The fans of Everton fell in love with him after a few mesmerising performances that took the Premier League by storm.

Sadly, these days are gone by and we will never see Donovan in a US shirt again.Donovan isn’t the first U.S. legend to be let go this way. Before the 1998 World Cup in France, coach Steve Sampson dropped John Harkes, a stalwart, hardnosed footballer he had previously named “Captain for Life” over what was then described as Harkes’ refusal to play as a holding midfielder and other “leadership” issues. The reason was more complicated than that, but Harkes’ exit left Sampson with a hole that his other players couldn’t fill. The U.S. lost three straight in the opening round, including a game against Germany — in which Jurgen Klinsmann, by the way, scored a stunning goal. Sampson lost his job shortly after the tournament. Klinsmann understands that if Donovan’s goal scoring isn’t replicated by one of the 23 he picked, he’s going to suffer the same fate.

PostHeaderIcon Lack of Expectation will liberate England

The lack of expectation will be a major this time around for England. It has come through the previous ten years, as the population starts embracing failure after failure and England not at their best in the past Summer tournamnets, be it the World Cup and European Championships.

Come this time around, it is expected to work in their favour. At Euro 2000, when England were in a tough group and played France the first game, only a lapse in concentration in the final five minutes of the game cost them victory in which they totally dominated a french side at their peak. And and that time, when the likes of a young Wayne Rooney, Owen, and the so called ‘Golden generation’ where at the beginning of something which should have been promising, they did really well and deserved to go advance. England with the likes of STurridge, Sterling, Shaw, Wellbeck, Wilshere will just go out and enjoy playing their football. Steven Gerrard rightly pointed out that the senior players of the squad should have the responsibility of coping and dealing with the pressure. The pressure should never be put on young players if England are to do well.
